Artificial intelligence is part of the program for the XVI South Minas Ophthalmology Symposium, scheduled for September 26, at Hotel Metrópole, in São Lourenço. The event brings together ophthalmologists, residents, and medical students from the southern macro-region of Minas Gerais.
Two lectures directly address the topic. Dr. André Maia presents “The future of the retina in the age of artificial intelligence,” and Dr. Andreia Nunes speaks about “Precision ophthalmology by AI.” In ophthalmology, technology has been applied in identifying and monitoring retinal changes and evaluating patient responses to treatments.
The program is not limited to technology. The retina and uvea module features Dr. Eduardo Cunha de Souza, on clinical retina and case discussions, and Dr. Kimble Matos, on eyes and systemic diseases. The glaucoma section is led by Dr. Fábio Kanadani. In cornea, Dr. Ana Laura de Oliveira Dias, from the transplant service at Hospital de Clínicas de Itajubá, and Dr. Paulo Ferrara participate.
In the cataract module, Dr. Rachel Gomes addresses “Cataract with refractive intent” and Dr. Alexandre Brasil, “Nanoophthalmia and congenital cataract.” In public health, Mauro Junqueira discusses the sector’s challenges and funding. The day concludes with Research Day, featuring scientific poster presentations by residents evaluated by a panel.
Capital congress, without the travel
With the theme “New perspectives to connect the future of ophthalmology,” the symposium’s proposal is to bring professionals from the interior closer to content and specialists who are usually concentrated in major capital city congresses, without the need for long trips.
The 2026 edition is organized by Hospital de Olhos do Sul de Minas in partnership with the South Minas Ophthalmology Society, presided over by Dr. Mansur Elias Ticly Júnior, from Lavras. Registration is open to doctors, residents, and medical students.
